What makes a glass ionomer a true glass ionomer?
- It must have an acid-base reaction (i.e. metal + acid= salt). You must mix materials together to have a true glass ionomer.
- Calcium ions are gradually replaced by Aluminum ions to produce a more cross linked, more mechanically stronger material.
- Glass ionomers are materials consisting of ion-cross linked polymer matrices surrounding glass-reinforcing filler particles.
- Fluoride is an integral part of the matrix formation.
- Polyacrylic acid may be freeze dried-(anhydrous) and combined with aluminosilicate powder.
- Water is a key ingredient for the setting reaction.
