Ample evidence has shown a relationship of periodontal health as an important component in management of some systemic diseases. A relationship is suggested between acute systemic infections and the occurrence of cardiovascular disease that includes myocardial infarction and stroke. Low birth weight babies- believed to occur because accumulation of gram(-) micro organisms such as those found in periodontitis results in increased release of prostaglandin and cytokines which may act on distant sites such as the placenta.
